The Passover story is that, after centuries of slavery by the Egyptian pharaohs, God saw the people's distress and sent Moses to the pharaoh. "Send forth My people, so that they may serve Me," he had Moses tell the pharaoh. After several warnings were ignored God sent 10 plagues that destroyed everything from their livestock to their crops. On midnight on the 15th of the Hebrew month of Nissan in the year 1313 B.C. God sent the last plague, which killed all the Egyptians' firstborn. He spared the children of Israel, "passing over" their homes. This is how the holiday got its name.After the 10th plague the Israelites soon received their freedom. They left so quickly that they did not wait for their bread to rise and ate unleavened bread, which led Jews to only eat unleavened bread during the holiday in commemoration of that flight from Egypt.
